Verlyn G. Slieter

December 8, 1934 — June 20, 2013

VERLYN GENE SLIETER was born on December 8, 1934 to Emil and Helga (Jacobson) Slieter in Luverne, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hills, Minnesota. Verlyn grew up in Hills, Minnesota on the farm and graduated from Hills High School with the class of 1952. Following high school, he farmed with his Dad and joined the U.S. Air Force National Guard of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

He united in marriage to Frances Reid on October 28, 1955, at the United Methodist Church in Luverne, Minnesota. Their union was blessed with four children and 57 years of marriage together. The couple moved to Sioux Falls where they raised their family and Verlyn worked as a meat cutter for John Morrell for 16 years.

In 1972, the family moved to Jasper, Minnesota at which time, they owned and operated Slieter’s Meats and Lockers for 10 years. He then worked for Ellison Meats in Pipestone for several years before retiring in 2008.

Verlyn died at his home in Ihlen, Minnesota on Thursday, June 20, 2013 at the age of 78.

Verlyn was a member of Jasper Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was very proud of his service in the Air Guard. He was also a former member of the El Riad Shriners in Sioux Falls and the Shrine Clowns. Verlyn enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, playing cards and time spent with his family.

Verlyn is survived by his wife, Fran of Ihlen; children: Kathryn (Tom) Baier of Chazy, New York, Judy (Paul) Bussell of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Susan (William) DeSchepper of New London, Minnesota and John (Dawn) Slieter of Papillion, Nebraska; grandchildren: Jeff and Aric Baier; Stephen, Katie and Michael Bussell, Sean, Alec, Eli and Grace DeSchepper, and Jacob and Natalie Slieter; great-grandchildren: Jeremy and Ian Baier and Nelson Baier; sister, Beverly Haugejorde of Duluth, Minnesota; nieces, nephews, family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
