ALVERA “POLLY” DORIS MARTINSON was born on November 5, 1918 to Fred and Emma (Binnebose) Pollock in Pipestone, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pipestone. She graduated from Pipestone High School and then from Nettleton Commercial College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Polly worked at Northern States Power Company and First National Bank, both in Pipestone, and Jasper State Bank where she met Valire. On March 16, 1946 she was united in marriage to Valire Martinson at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The couple made their home on the family farm in Alliance Township, Moody County, South Dakota. On February 5, 2017, Valire passed away peacefully in their home. Polly also remained in the home they had shared until her passing on Thursday, January 28, 2021 at the age of 102 years, two months, and 23 days.
Polly was a member of the Jasper Evangelical Lutheran Church where she was active in the Ladies Aid and Circle, and taught Sunday School. She was also a member of the Live ‘N Learn Extension Club, and a Cub Scout Den Mother. She was a talented crafter and enjoyed upholstery, sewing, quilting, crocheting, and baking. Her bread was the best ever! Working on crossword puzzles was one of her favorite pastimes.
She is lovingly remembered by her seven children, Bruce (Portia) Martinson of Jasper, Rene Wade of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Coleen (Tom) Bryan of Battle Lake, Minnesota, Jean (John) Jackson of Canton, Michigan, Karen (Barry) Jenson of Hastings, Minnesota, Sheri (Mike) Swenson of Jasper, and David (Diane) Martinson of Jasper; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Graber of Freeman, South Dakota, Marie Martinson of Dell Rapids, South Dakota; and many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Valire; her parents; her brother, Arthur (Minnie) Pollock; sister, Esther (Ellsworth) Dagel; brothers-in-law, Eugene and DeWane Martinson and Melvin "Punch" Graber; son-in-law, Larry Wade; and great-granddaughter, Kaylynn Kottman-Lee.
