Alvin Louis Huebner was born April 21, 1938 to Fred and Emma (Wechler) Huebner on a farm one mile north and one mile east of Holland, Minnesota. He was raised on the farm and attended District 30 Country School in Aetna Township, Pipestone County through the eighth grade. He then went to work as a farm laborer for area operations and worked for a short time at Hanson Silo. In 1957, he began working as a baker for Pan O’ Gold in Pipestone, Minnesota. On April 2, 1960, Alvin was united in marriage to Lois Thomsen at First English Lutheran Church in Tyler, Minnesota. Together the couple made their home in Pipestone and were blessed with three children. After twelve years working in Pipestone, Alvin took a job as a baker for Metz/Old Home Bakery in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. After 43 years of baking, Alvin retired in 2000. Lois preceded him in death on March 12, 2010. Alvin remained in their home and kept busy with keeping up with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and attending as many of their programs and sporting events as he could. When he wasn’t supporting his family at events, he could be found watching or listening to the Twins play baseball.
Alvin was a member of First Lutheran Church in Pipestone. He was also a member of the Baker’s Union Local 433 and the Golden Club. He enjoyed being a part of a group that believed in the greater good for others. He also enjoyed his coffee time with his friends. Alvin was well known in his neighborhood as the guy with the big black dog, Marley! He was a selfless man who was always willing to lend a hand without expecting anything in return. Alvin loved to spend time fishing and camping with Lois; they could always be found together in the boat out on a lake. Alvin was also an avid hunter and trapper. He was out hunting well into his 80’s. He was also fond of spending time at the cabin in Leech Lake on vacations with his family, those trips were always a highlight for him. Alvin passed away on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls at the age of 87 years, five months and 23 days. His infectious smile and his trademark long sleeve western shirt or flannel shirt will be missed deeply by those who knew him.
He is lovingly survived by his children, Jeff (Beth) Huebner of Sioux Falls, and Jolene (Mike) Erickson of Holland; grandchildren, Ben (Wendy) Huebner, Lee (Lisa) Erickson, Danielle Erickson, Amber (Lance) Fredricks; step-grandchildren, Eric Stevens and Amber Thilges; great-grandchildren, Lucas Huebner, Logan Huebner, Ava Erickson, Ella Erickson, Lincoln Leisinger, Reader Leisinger, Hayden Heard, Hadley Fredricks and Hexton Fredricks; step-great-grandchildren, Darren Stevens, Zelda Thilges and Henry Stevens; and numerous relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; daughter, Julie Huebner; step-grandson, Aaron Stevens; parents, Fred and Emma Huebner; nine brothers, Elmer, Wesley, Rudolph, Orville, Marvin, Donald, Theodore, Tom and Fritz; and seven sisters, Lillian Fischer, Velma Foster, Dorothy Thompson, Clara Opsahl, Bessie Popp, Mae Cambern and Vi Huebner.
