Barbara Hubner

Barbara Lee Hubner was born on January 27, 1936, to Roy James and Helen Lee (Berger) Langdon in Lincoln, NE. Her family moved to Chicago, IL when she was a small child. In 1947, her dad transferred to Sioux Falls, SD. At the age of 16, she lost her mom in a car accident. At 19, she met Louis Hubner, at the Arkota Ballroom. They were married on March 11, 1955 at St Paul Lutheran Church in Pipestone, MN.

Louis and Barb began a 60+ year partnership farming. As a farmer's wife, she nursed many animals on the farm: pigs, bottle calves and later goats and sheep. She raised chickens, geese, turkeys, and rabbits, all of which she could butcher. She and Louis bought their first Scotty dog named Chips in Sioux Falls, as a Christmas present in 1966. The kennel was born. Barb took huge pride in raising healthy, well-bred puppies for over 50 years.

Barb and Louis were blessed with six children. The kids kept her busy cooking, canning, gardening and sewing. Like her father, Barb had a huge garden which provided for the large family. She was busy canning and freezing. She was a great cook and passed that gift to all of us. She loved to sew, making clothes for all of her children, including Christmas dresses, western shirts, and even bridesmaid dresses. One of her greatest prides was the over 150 teddy bear blankets she made for family and friends. They were a true gift and a beautiful tradition.

Faith was very important to Barb. She raised her children in the Lutheran Faith, teaching adult and children's Sunday school for over 40 years. Barb and Louis became charter members of Christ the King Free Lutheran Church in Pipestone. She wrote her own Bible Study Lesson titled, "Come to Jesus...Share with others". It was published and taught throughout the Lutheran Synod.

Barb was the picture taker. No event was undocumented - graduations, weddings, birthdays, holidays, even car accidents. She remembered birthdays, anniversaries, and sent homemade cards to all. She valued family and spent her life sharing "teachable moments". She considered her family to be her greatest life accomplishment.

On August 6 2019, Louis preceded her in death. Barb continued to live on the family farm until October of 2024 when she became a resident of the Estelline Nursing Home in Estelline, SD. She passed away there on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at the age of 89 years, 3 months, and 18 days.

She enjoyed hunting, fishing (even bullheads), playing cards (especially pinochle), doing crosswords, mind puzzles, bird watching, and afternoon coffee with friends. She was a story-teller, a math wizard, and a gifted caretaker (opening her house and table to anyone in need). She will be greatly missed.

She is lovingly remembered by her six children, Robert (Audrey) Hubner of Pipestone MN, Helen (Scott) Ketelsen of Hull, IA, Mary (Ron) Ruud of Colman SD, Diana Meyer of Wichita, KS, James (Renee) Hubner of Manhattan, KS, and Bernard (Christi) Hubner of Holland, MN; 20 grandchildren, Renee Baumann, Sydnee Hubner, Brandee Hubner, Bobbi Jo Ketelsen, Katie Mae Ketelsen, Kaytee DeVries, Robert Pelletier, Joseph Ketelsen, Wendy Maserek, John Ruud, Jamie Green, Christina Trygstad, LeAnne Stewart, Steven Meyer, Benjamin Meyer, Amanda Hubner, Sharlet Hubner, Danielle Pearson, Kristopher Hubner, and Courtney Pierce; 36 great-grandchildren; sisters, Joyce Manahan, LoRena Hunt, Patricia Terry; brothers, Gregory Langdon, Michael Langdon, Thomas Langdon, and John Langdon; and many other loving friends and family members including Terry Hacker and family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Louis; her granddaughter, Barbara Meyer; her brothers, Charles Langdon, and Jerry Langdon.
