BERNARD HENRY BLOM was born on August 20th, 1934 to Walter and Bertha (Schelhaas) Blom on his family farm in Murray County, Minnesota. During Bernard’s childhood his family relocated to Pipestone County. He attended county school up to the 8th grade and assisted on his family farm with his parents and siblings until he was inducted into the United States Army on November 3, 1958. During his service, Bernard was a cook and spent most of his enlistment at Fort Knox. He was honorably discharged from the Army on December 10th, 1962.

Bernard was united in marriage to Gretchen Hamersma on December 8, 1962 in Ruthton, Minnesota. Together Bernard and Gretchen made their home on a farm near Cazenovia where they were blessed with four children. Bernard spent his life as a farmer, growing and raising crops and livestock. He also spent many years serving on the Troy Township Board. Bernard sold the farm and moved into town in the fall of 1998. Following his retirement, he spent his time wood working, assisting with janitorial duties at the Peace United Methodist Church, and helping his nephews farm. In October of 2020, Bernard became a resident at the Good Samaritan Communities in Pipestone. He passed away there on Saturday, October 16, 2021, at the age of 87 years, one month, and 27 days.

Bernard was a member of Peace United Methodist Church in Pipestone. He enjoyed gardening, reading, playing cards, Sunday drives with Gretchen, and making spontaneous cheese runs to Wisconsin. He loved spending time with his family and friends. Bernard will always be remembered for his great sense of humor and the stories he left behind.

Bernard is survived by his wife of 58 years, Gretchen Blom; children, Lois (Jeff) Hellwinckel of Pipestone, Bonnie (Brian) Gunnink of Sioux Falls, Brenda (Reed) Engle of Wessington Springs, South Dakota, and Scott (Amy) Blom of Pipestone; grandchildren, Amanda, Sandra, Ashley, April, and Melissa; great grandchildren, Aidyn, Amber, Noah, Addisyn, and Sophia; and many other family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Allen; two sisters; and three brothers.
