Carol Darlene Foss

Carol Darlene Foss, age 86, of Pipestone, MN passed away on Monday, February 5, at Good Samaritan Society – Sioux Falls Village.

Carol was born on December 22, 1937 to Axel and Hilda (Holter) Amdahl on her family’s farm in Moody County, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethania (Messiah) Lutheran Church at rural Flandreau, South Dakota. She attended Quissel School #20 and graduated from Jasper High School in 1955. Carol continued her education at General Beadle Teachers College (Dakota State) at Madison, SD, graduating with a teaching certificate in 1957. While attending General Beadle, she met Darrell Foss. Their first date was at the Sweet Heart Ball in 1956 and they were never apart after that. The couple was married at Bethania (Messiah) Church on June 1, 1958. Following their marriage, Carol taught third and fourth grade for two years in Trent, SD and Jasper, MN. They then moved to Pipestone, Minnesota. In 1960, when the first of their four children was born, she stayed home to raise their family. Carol’s love for children brought her back into the education field. She worked for the Pipestone School District for over 20 years as a Special Education Paraprofessional, along side Casey Wieme.

Carol was a member of First Lutheran Church in Pipestone where she taught Sunday School, was active in Circle (Bible Study group) and served at many coffee/tea parties. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and taking pictures of family, flowers and the many travels she shared with Darrell. Carol spent time in the garden caring for her flowers, especially the roses. One of Carol’s greatest joys was spending time with her granddaughters at Village West and Arnold’s Park at Lake Okoboji, IA.

In 1956, Carol was crowned the first Snow Queen for Lake Preston, SD. She went on to compete and was runner up in the South Dakota Snow Queen Pageant.  Fifty years later, in 2006, she was invited back to crown the 50th Snow Queen for Lake Preston.

Carol is lovingly remembered by her husband of 65 years, Darrell Foss of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; three children, Steve Foss of Park Rapids, Minnesota, Diane (Lonnie) Nichols of Sioux Falls, and Denise (Daren) Heidebrink of Crooks, South Dakota; five granddaughters, Emily (Trenton) Van Roekel, Anna Nichols, Kami (Payton Brunkow) Foss, Katie (Keaton) Grevengoed and Kari (Jonathan) Hass; six great-grandchildren, Destiny Foss, Bexley Grevengoed, Cooper Grevengoed, Walker Grevengoed, Lilliana Hass and Nora Van Roekel.   She is preceded in death by her parents, her son David, and her brothers, Orville, Glen, Wayne and Dean Amdahl.
