DAVID ALAN HUISKES was born in Luverne, Minnesota on April 23, 1949 to Alvin and Dorothea (Kurtz) Huiskes. He was baptized on May 15, 1949 and received his confirmation on June 2, 1963, both at St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne. Dave lived in Luverne and the surrounding area his entire life. Dave started working in 7th grade at the school cafeteria earning $30 a month, plus one free hot lunch daily. The money he earned from this first job he gave to his parents to help with expenses. Dave enlisted in the United States Army and served in the 551st Military Police Company in 1969 and served at Fort Polk, Louisiana until 1971. He returned to Minnesota and worked with Deutz and Crow Concrete in Luverne from 1971 to 1973. On October 6, 1973 Dave was united in marriage to Shirley Pommer at Zion Presbyterian Church in Ellsworth, Minnesota. From 1973 to September 6, 2019 when he retired, Dave worked for Sweetman Construction/Concrete Materials, later known as MDU. He held positions as truck driver, plant maintenance mechanic, dispatch, plant operator and plant manager. On Friday, July 2, 2021, Dave died peacefully while at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at the age of 72 years, 2 months, and 9 days.

Dave was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne his entire life. He served as an elder for a number of years, served on the board of education for 12 years, on various committees, drove the church bus for 20 years from 1979 to 1999, head usher for both services for 15 years, and coached the St. John baseball team from 1979 to 1992. Dave’s greatest joy was his wife, children and grandchildren. He loved working on any kind of project as long as he was working! Playing cards with his family was one of his favorite things to do. Playing bean bags, sitting at the lake, fishing, and helping anyone in need were other pleasures he enjoyed. Dave was a “company man” as well, giving 100% all the time. He never left out his co-workers, looking out for them daily, making sure they were safe and well. He was well known for donating his vacation time to any employee in need of additional time for health or bereavement. Kids held a special place in his heart. He would always make time for children whether it was playing games, wrestling, or spoiling them with treats. Dave was a man of honesty, integrity, generosity, faith, dedication and a strong work ethic. He was very well known to his family for being late, due to his generous heart and dedication to help others in need. He fought the good fight, he finished the race, he kept the faith.

Dave is lovingly remembered by his wife, Shirley of Luverne; children, Paul (Rebecca) Huiskes of Luverne, Amy (Matthew) Lee of Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, and Mark (Jacqueline) Huiskes of Shakopee, Minnesota; and 10 grandchildren, Kayetlin, Addison and Emmery Huiskes, Christian, Jordyn, Mya and Jaxon Lee, Sydney, Samantha and Ryan Huiskes; siblings, Dianna (Glen) Malmquist of Luverne, Darla (Keith) Schmuck of Luverne, Donna (Lon) Remme of Luverne, Marcia (Don) Bork of Beaver Creek, Jim (Mary) Huiskes of Northfield, Minnesota, Dawn (Dan) DeWispelaere of Luverne and Kathy (Jeff) Wilsey of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; sister-in-law, Anna Mae Huiskes of Luverne; and many nieces, nephews, family, and numerous friends.
