Ed Brockhouse was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and faithful Christian who cherished the time spent with his family and the many interests that brought him joy throughout his life.
Edward was born to Henry and Tressa (Ahlers) Brockhouse on June 1,1936 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He grew up on a farm by Edgerton, Minnesota. Ed attended school at either Edgerton Public School or the Christian Reformed School in Edgerton; whichever bus schedule would work best with the farm life. Ed graduated from the eighth grade and began trucking and buying/selling commodities across the country for his parents.
Ed was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Lake Benton and was involved in activities such as ushering and assisting with volunteer programs. He was a Lions member serving as the President for a few years to help his local community.
Ed had a special love for the outdoors and anything with wheels. He especially enjoyed riding side-by-side and snowmobiling with Janis, particularly in the beautiful Black Hills. Motorcyles were always a hobby and owning many different Harleys and eventually a Lehman Harley trike. Ed and Janis took many trips across the country from riding the Tail of the Dragon in NC to the various National Parks out west. Their favorite was the Black Hills during the Sturgis Rally to ride with family and friends. He also took great pride in caring for and driving his antique cars and pickups, They were members of both the Model T & Model A touring clubs and traveled to places such as KS, IA, MN & MO. They once hosted a Model A event in downtown Lake Benton.
Driving truck across the country Ed enjoyed the scenery and his favorite places would later take Janis in their motorhome to visit during the summer months. He always had a passion for the west and the mountains. He was able to travel and see 49 states in his lifetime (except Hawaii as difficult to drive there).
His occupation (or many would refer to it as his hobby) was driving truck. He drove many miles across the continental US and dispatched 60+ trucks at one time via their brokerage business. He took pride in ensuring his fleet was serviced; washed and ready for the next trip for either him, Janis or hired drivers. He retired from trucking three times (thus the last truck Janis pinstriped on the back “Semi-Retired”). These interests gave him countless hours of enjoyment and many memories to share with family and friends.
Ed also had a soft spot for animals. From growing up on the farm in Edgerton; farming in Flandreau or the old Worth Farm in Lake Benton he would care for cattle, hogs and of course Janis’ horses. Later years he had an affinity for his outdoor barn cats ensuring they had enough to eat. His passion for animals and their well-being is another reflection of his caring nature.
Ed is lovingly remembered by his; children, Cindy “Sara” (David) Hillestad of Rock Valley, Iowa; Keven (Becky) Faaborg of Ward, South Dakota; Cheryl (Jeff) Wilson of Hartford, South Dakota; Merlyn (Lori) Brockhouse of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Loren (Whitney) Brockhouse of Grimes, Iowa; Cheryl Vos of Tyler, Minnesota; Steve Brockhouse of Grand Forks, North Dakota; Howard Brockhouse of Middle River, Minnesota; Bradley (Sandra) Brockhouse of Keystone, South Dakota; and Ryan (AnnMarie) Brockhouse of Princeton, Minnesota.
