Fern Horton

FERN EVELYN HORTON was born February 25, 1924 to Henry and Alma (Borchers) Plueger in Le Mars, Plymouth County, Iowa. Fern was confirmed on May 28, 1939 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron, Iowa. After her graduation from Akron High School in 1942, she worked at Cass Realty in Le Mars. On December 18, 1943, she was united in marriage to Arthur Walter Horton at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron. They farmed in the Akron area until 1954 when they moved to Centerville, South Dakota for three years and Art co-owned the John Deere dealership with his brother, Clarence. In the spring of 1957, they moved to Jasper, Minnesota for a year and began farming again. The next year they moved to a farm near Pipestone, Minnesota. Fern was employed at Robson Wholesale Grocery for 3 ½ years, operating a posting machine. Then she began working at the A.S.C.S. (US Department of Agriculture) for 12 years. Fern also worked at the County Assessor’s Office for 2 ½ years. In 2014, she moved into the Falls Landing Assisted Living in Pipestone and resided there until a fall lead to surgery and her entering the care of the Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone on April 1, 2022. She died there peacefully on Friday, April 15, 2022 at the age of 98.

Fern was a member of First Lutheran Church in Pipestone and very involved in the Church Circle. She was active in the American Legion Auxiliary, serving as president two years and as secretary. Fern was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed her family, gardening, watching birdlife, making greeting cards on her computer and doing puzzles.

She is lovingly remembered by her four children: son, Dwight (Sheila) Horton of Pipestone and their children, Cindy (Tony) Gaasterland and their children, Rachel and Becca, Rhonda Horton and her son, Gabriel, and Eugene (Katie) Horton and their children, Braelee, Colton and Athena, son, Kenneth Horton of Ghent, Minnesota, son, Dennis (Barb) Horton of Dell Rapids, South Dakota and their children, Jeff and Brian, and daughter, Linda (William) Ferris of Steamboat Springs, Colorado and their children, Sara (Cole) Tlamka and their children, Ferris and Waylon, and Stephanie (Jared) Steinman of Jackson, WY. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Art; her parents; one sister, Arlene; and one brother, Darrel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Atlas for Life or Pipestone County Hospice.
