Gudmund "Goodie" Maynard Broin
November 09, 1935 – October 24, 2025
I was adopted four weeks after birth by Gudmund and May Broin from Gonvick, MN area. I lived on a farm until the age of 15, at which time my family moved to Fosston, MN. I completed my high school education at Fosston in 1954. After graduation, I enlisted in the United States Airforce on January 4, 1955. I was sent to CA for basic training and returned to marry my beautiful wife, Dorothy Marie Grundyson, in McIntosh, MN on April 2, 1955.
We then traveled to Scott Airforce Base in Illinois where I attended technical school. Afterwards, Dorothy and I returned to Fosston and I went on to French Morocco, with travels thru Casablanca and Athens, Greece and on to be stationed at Incirlik Airforce Base in Adana, Turkey. During the year I spent in Turkey, our daughter, Lynn Renea, was born on 4-30-1956. I returned to Fosston on January 5, 1956 to be with my new daughter and wife. It was great to get back to “freezing” Minnesota! Hard times struck as Dorothy and I lost our daughter on February 5, 1957. After mourning our loss, the Airforce stationed myself and Dorothy in Fort Walton Beach, FL. We stayed in Florida for two sun filled years enjoying the beach and water skiing. Upon discharge from the United States Airforce on January 4, 1959, I then went to work for Bendix Field Engineering for the following eight years. We resided in East Grand Forks, MN with our five children: Dianna born 2-05-1960, David born 2-10-1961, Daniel born 12-31-1961 and the twins; Dean and Denise born 1-17-1963.
My career in field engineering took our family to many locations. I closed the satellite tracking station for NASA in Grand Forks, ND and moved to Goddard Space Flight Center in Washington, D.C. Dorothy and I didn’t care for that area so we moved back to Grand Forks where I worked as a Civilian at the Airforce base for the next two years.
In 1966, I became employed with the Federal Aviation Administration and was assigned to the long-range radar station in Horicon, WI. Our family of seven resided in a farming community in Hustisford, WI. During this time, we traveled to the Federal Aviation School located in Oklahoma City, OK for temporary periods of time for continued education with the FAA. We spent the next 15 years in Hustisford raising and educating our children. All five children graduated from Hustisford High School. After our children graduated and moved on, I accepted a supervisor position at Tyler, MN, long range radar site. My next Supervisor position took Dorothy and I to Watford City, ND for the next two years. I really enjoyed the remote area of Watford, but Dorothy was not thrilled with the closest town of any size being 50 miles away! We spent four years in Watford. The next job transfer led me to Finly, ND. I stayed in Finly while Dorothy lived at our retirement location in MN. I worked 10 hours a day, four days a week and commuted to our home in Detroit Lakes, MN on Height of Land Lake every weekend for two years. I retired from the Federal Aviation Administration in July of 1994.
We spent 14 years enjoying our lake home and community. In 2006, we decided to move back to Tyler and reside closer to our children and grandchildren and have resided here since.
I was baptized in the Lutheran Church, confirmed and married. Dorothy and I were devoted church members always and participated in church events and the choir for years. Our five children attended Bethany Lutheran School prior to attending high school. I enjoyed hunting, fishing, softball, bowling, tennis, basketball, water sports, trap shooting and reading. My life was dedicated to our Lord and Savior, my wife Dorothy Broin, and our five children.
Goodie was survived by his wife, Dorothy; children, Dianna (Ron), David, Daniel, Dean (Lori) and Denise (John); and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to Danebod New Build Fund.
