Janice Beverly Harkema

Janice Harkema, was born on March 10th, 1941 to Arthur and Erma (Miller) Glaser in Flandreau, South Dakota. Janice grew up on a farm north of Flandreau with her older sister Joyce. She graduated from Flandreau High School in 1959. Janice then enrolled in Sioux Valley Nursing School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where she graduated in 1962 as a registered nurse. She moved to Pipestone, Minnesota in 1964 where she began her career at the old Pipestone Hospital followed by 35 years of night shifts at the Ashton Care Center. She retired in 2005 after a 41 year nursing career. 
Janice met the love of her life Larry in 1964 while "Cruising the Square". They were married October 2, 1965 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Flandreau, South Dakota. This union blessed them with three daughters, Jean, Jamie, and Lori. Janice and Larry made their home in Pipestone where they were married for 58 years. During their marriage, their home was filled with love, laughter, music, and the company of family and friends.


On February 29, 2024, Janice died peacefully, at age 82, surrounded by her family at the Pipestone County Hospice House in Pipestone, Minnesota.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband Larry Harkema of Pipestone, Minnesota; her three daughters, Jean (Keith) Steenstra of Holland, Minnesota, Jamie Fritz (Mark Lunn) of Pipestone, Minnesota, Lori (Jim) Phelps of Tea, South Dakota; six grandchildren, Whitney (Jordan) Tanis, Spencer (Sierra) Fritz, Marah (Cole) Lytle, Jason Steenstra (April Haupert), Lance Tvedt, Landon Fritz; Three Great-Grandchildren, Harper and Audden Tanis, and Emersyn Lytle; Sister, Joyce Beard of Winona, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews. Janice is preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Erma Glaser; father- and mother-in-law Chris and Sophia Harkema. 
We will forever remember you as a devoted wife, nurturing mother, and loving grandmother and great-grandmother.
