Jeremy Ryan Duus

Jeremy Ryan Duus, age 49, of Tyler, Minnesota was born in Ivanhoe, MN on October 30th, 1974, to David and Karen (Petersen) Duus. He was the youngest of the four Duus children, he loved and looked up to Jodi, Danny, Nicole, and his parents his whole life. Jeremy grew up in and just outside of Tyler and attended Russell-Tyler-Ruthton schools and graduated in 1993. During his school years Jeremy was friends with many and remained close to most of them throughout his life. His high school years were often the topic of shared stories about football, school events, and social activities, but mostly the social activities.

After high school, Jeremy helped his father and brother with the sawmill business and other logging adventures. He considered himself a true lumberjack and trees would always be a critical part of his life. He built his home on Lake Benton when he was only 19 years old, and this was the beginning of his carpentry and woodworking life. Working with trees and building with wood was one of Jeremy’s true passions and one that he got to experience throughout his life. He had a woodworking business and an Etsy Shop called Shady Shore Woodshop, both allowed him to build homes, remodels, cabinets, and furniture for a lot of people in the area. A part of him is still in so many people’s homes and lives because of this.

On June 30th, 2001, Jeremy married Cynthia (Mihin) Duus at Danebod Lutheran Church in Tyler and they made their home on Lake Benton with their four children, Nathaniel, Gwyneth, Alexander, and Jackson. Jeremy adored his family and found ways each day to make sure they knew this. Their home was filled with laughter, music, good food, Jesus, and love. In 2015, the family moved to Tyler, Minnesota. Jeremy continued his woodworking, but also found many ways to expand his talents while enjoying life in town. He worked with his friends at Apollo Water in Tyler; as a meat-cutter at Maynards Foods in Tyler; and spent time working at Menards in Marshall, MN. Jeremy finally found his dream job working as an arborist at McCrory Gardens in Brookings, SD. He was only there for the past four months but found so much joy in his work and those he worked with.

Jeremy had many passions in life and was somehow amazing at all of them. He had a lifelong passion and incredible talent in working with trees and wood. He was also an amazing chef and could make a mean turkey, smoked meat, brewed his own beer, baked his own sourdough and pastries, and was a master of Danish cuisine. He also enjoyed reading classics such as Tom Hardy and Kurt Vonnegut or working on crossword puzzles. Jeremy spent much of his down time with his wife, Cindy and they loved to spend “hygge” time at home with each other, take trips to new breweries, camp at as many Minnesota state parks as they could, and hike with their children and dog, Yuri.

Jeremy died unexpectedly in the early morning of July 19, 2024, at the young age of 49 years. He is immeasurably missed by his wife, children, family, and friends, who are finding peace in knowing how very happy he was, how amazing and strong his faith was, and how many lives he touched. Jeremy is survived by his wife, Cindy; his children Nathaniel Duus, Gwyneth Duus, Alexander (Allyson) Duus, and Jackson Duus. He also leaves behind his mother Karen Duus, sisters Nicole (Scott) Peterson, Jodi (Pat) Haag, his father and mother-in-law Daniel and Rosmari Mihin, brother and sister-in-law David and Kayla Mihin, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, David Duus; his brother, Daniel Duus; and his grandparents. Farvel, Jer!
