John Hup Jr. was born to John Sr. and Annie (Fikse) Hup on February 19, 1933 in Steen, Minnesota. He was baptized at the Steen Reformed Church. The family moved to California later that year and John attended elementary school in California. The Hup family returned to Rock County in 1944 and settled in the Hills, Minnesota area. John attended Hills High School graduating in 1950. He met and later on December 3, 1952, married the love of his life, Alvina Hoogeveen in the Steen Reformed Church. The couple made their first home in Steen, Minnesota. Only five months into their marriage, duty called and John left the farm for the Korean War. After serving his country for two years, John was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army and returned home to Alvina in April of 1955. The couple settled into a busy life on the farm. John worked the land and helped to raise their three boys, Steve, Ken, and Dave. In 1982, after thirty years of farming, John retired and the couple moved to Luverne, Minnesota. During the late 1970s and most of the 1980s John helped out at Engebretson Funeral Home in Luverne. He also worked part-time at Papik Motors and enjoyed attending the events of his grandchildren.

On Monday, February 5, 2024, John died peacefully at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne at the age of 90 years, 11 months and 17 days.
