Larry Lustfield

Larry Leroy Lustfield was born to Fred and Frieda (Kniese) Lustfield on August 11, 1943 in Salem, South Dakota. The family lived various places in South Dakota, California and Minnesota. At the age of 16, Larry moved to Canby, Minnesota to live with his brother, Marlin. Larry graduated from Canby High School in 1962 and went to work with his brother, Orlin, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Larry then attended Bemidji State College in Bemidji, Minnesota, and later went to St Paul, Minnesota where he attended barber school. Larry married Janice Kompelien in 1963. The couple was blessed with four children, Steven, Robert, Monica and Valerie. Larry barbered in Canby for two years and then bought the Sportsman Barber Shop in Lake Benton, Minnesota, where he barbered for 47 years. The highlights of his workday included visiting with his customers and with friends at coffee. In 1996, Larry met Julie Wakeman at the Brookings Area Singles Club in Brookings, South Dakota. The couple married in 1997 and lived in Brookings and later Tyler, Minnesota. They enjoyed country western music and attended many concerts. They took trips to the Bahamas, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Alaska and also traveled to see family in Oklahoma, Texas and California. Larry sponsored a bowling team in Ivanhoe, Minnesota and bowled for many years. He also enjoyed coin collecting with his son, Steve, and hunting. Out of state hunting trips were to the Northwest Territories in Canada and Alaska. On these hunting trips, Larry was able to shoot Dall sheep and Caribou. But the one animal that Larry put into the Boone and Crockett record books was a whitetail deer shot near Lake Benton (the specific location is still a family secret!)

On Thursday, September 14, 2023, Larry died peacefully in Elmore, Minnesota at the age of 80 years, one month and three days.

Larry is survived by his wife, Julie, of Algona, Iowa; four children, Steven Lustfield of Volga, South Dakota, Robert Lustfield of Balaton, Minnesota, Monica Kinner and Valerie Lustfield both of Sioux Falls; two stepchildren; grandchildren, Christopher, Tabitha, Megan, Heather, Jataya, Kristina (Jarrad), Kelsey, Miranda (Scott), Tyler (Chelsey), Brett and Sarah; great-grandchildren, Roman, Mya, Walter, Melanie, Ruby and Wyatt; siblings, Delores Severson, Marlin Lustfield, Gayle (Billy) Smith; one sister-in-law, Carolyn Lustfield of Balaton, Minnesota; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Frieda Lustfield; sisters, Frieda, Lois, Ellen, Eileen; brothers, Verlin, Ronnie and Orlin; daughter-in-law, Wendy Lustfield; and step-grandson, Stephen Wakeman.
