Malva Ann Devine

July 13, 1921 — July 12, 2020

Malva Ann (Dorman) DeVine…

was born on July 13, 1921 at home on a farm East of Goodwin, South Dakota to George and Anna Dorman. Malva was baptized June 16, 1935 at Saint Peters Evangelical Lutheran Church in Goodwin. She later became a Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent in Goodwin. She graduated from high school in May 1939 at Goodwin Public School. She was united in marriage to James B. DeVine on October 26, 1940 at St. Peters Evangelical Church in Goodwin. Two daughters were born to this union-Marjorie and Sharon. They lived in Grover, South Dakota for their first year of marriage where she was a member of Grover Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
They made their home here until they moved to Pipestone, Minnesota in October of 1959. After moving to Pipestone, she worked at Culligan Soft Water Service, Madson Drug, Fashion Tree, Pipestone Federal, Pipestone County Hospital and bookkeeper for DeVine Oil Company. Malva also became a member of First Lutheran Church where she served on the Trustee Board and as Treasure for six and a half years. In February of 1984, Malva became a member of Christ the King Free Lutheran Church where she was treasurer until February of 2010. She was active in her Circle, Aglow, Bible Studies, Women’s Christian Club, and served on the various city election boards for many years.
Malva enjoyed reading, walking, dominos, embroidering, spending time with friends and family and making her famous divinity and sugar peanuts for friends and relatives. She especially enjoyed the years when her grandchildren were young and would spend the summers with her and James. She always looked forward to her birthday where she would receive many cards and she held each one very dear to her heart and would read them over and over again. She also enjoyed getting visitors and would always make you feel right at home. You can bet if you stopped by for a visit, you would receive a thank you card from Malva in the mail soon after. She had a special place in her heart for her nieces and nephew who were always so giving of themselves for Malva. She was especially blessed to have such loving neighbors in Paul and Marion who were always so good to watch over her.
Malva transitioned to the Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone in August of 2016. She especially enjoyed playing bingo with her daughters and husbands who came faithfully every Saturday. She also enjoyed visiting the many people she knew in her new home. Malva became ill and was called home Sunday, July 12, 2020 at 8:40 PM. Three hours and 20 minutes short of her 99th birthday. Malva was so looking forward to this birthday and receiving all the cards from her cherished friends and family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, George and Anna; her husband, James; sisters, Mamie and Alice; brothers, Arnold, Lynn, Wilbur (Jack), and Murell (Bud); and a great-grandson, Dylan Reed Pederson. Malva is survived by her daughters, Marjorie and Paul Pierret and Sharon and Leroy Gravley; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
