Marty Defries

MARTY LEE DEFRIES was born on October 17, 1967 to Garry Owen and Barbara Jean (Schraeder) Defries in Windom, Minnesota. He grew up in Windom and attended grade school there until the age of 12. When Marty was 12 his dad died and his family moved to Estherville, Iowa. He continued his education there and attended Estherville High School, graduating in 1985. In his younger years he painted and did landscape work. He also drove truck for Schwann’s for a number of years. Marty met Tammy Barlow at a party in Estherville and the two were united in marriage on May 7, 1994 in Estherville. The couple moved to Newton, Iowa and then later to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He lived in Luverne, Minnesota for five years and then when health issues arose he moved to Pipestone, Minnesota. Marty entered the care of the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls and died there on Saturday, September 10, 2022 at the age of 54.

Marty enjoyed fishing, golfing, grilling, and watching cooking shows. He liked to watch horse racing and loved his Minnesota Vikings. He was a funny guy and a talker. He could talk your ear off. He loved his dog, Maggie.

Marty is lovingly remembered by his wife, Tammy of Pipestone; three children, Alex, Cody, and Caitlin Defries, all of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and his sister, Tanya Defries (Robert Origer) of Estherville, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Garry and Barb Defries.
