Robert “Bob” August Fick was born on September 22, 1937, to Louis and Frieda (Sohl) Fick on the family farm in Martin Township, Rock County, Minnesota, where he was raised. He was baptized on October 17, 1937 and confirmed his faith on June 6, 1952 at St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne, Minnesota. He attended Pleasant View Country School through the eighth grade and then continued his education at Hills High School, graduating in 1955. Following his education, Bob continued his work in the family farming operation. He also worked at the Blue Ribbon Hatchery until entering the Luverne National Guard. He enjoyed life on the farm and all the activities and hard work that came with it, especially raising baby calves. He also enjoyed many adventurous activities with friends and vacationing with family. In later years, he and Avis enjoyed traveling in their conversion van, visiting all 50 states. On July 17, 1964, Bob was united in marriage to Avis Strassburg at St. John Lutheran Church. They later moved to 748 160th where they farmed, settled into farm life together, and raised their four children. They endured the farm crisis in the 1980’s and learned the value of what was truly important. For many years, they managed their farrow to finish hog operation. In 2013, the couple retired from farming and moved to their current home east of Luverne. In March 2025, Bob’s health required him to become a resident at the Good Samaritan Society – Mary Jane Brown Home in Luverne. He passed away with his family surrounding him at his bedside on Monday, January 12, 2026 at the age of 88 years, three months and 21 days.
Bob was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne. He later became a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, Iowa where he had served as an usher and on the finance board. He enjoyed bullhead fishing, bonfires, and spending time with family. In his later years, he enjoyed collecting dreamcatchers and finding just the right place for them to be hung.
Bob is lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Avis; four sons, Kevin (Julie), Timothy (Maggie), Jeffrey (Missy), and Bradley (Marsha), all of Luverne; 10 grandchildren, Jennifer (Eric) Gaul, Meranda (John) Kramer, Austin Fick (Jordyn Gyberg), Payton (Kaitlyn) Fick, Tyler (Halle) Fick, Katie (Shane) Johnson, Drew Fick (Mia Griesse), Ryan Fick, Mallie Fick and Blakley Fick; 7 great-grandchildren, Broden Kramer, Raelynn Kramer, Gracyn Kramer, Maisyn Kramer, Ruth Gaul, Rhett Gaul and Vivienne Fick; a brother, Vernon Fick of Hills; three in-laws, Egbert Ohling of Rock Rapids, Sharon Fick of Hugo, Minnesota, and Audrey Von Holt of North Mankato, Minnesota and other family and friends.
