Robert Vincent Somnis was born on November 15, 1971 in Slayton, Minnesota to Warren and Alverda (Houser) Somnis. He grew up in Worthington, Minnesota, getting into many shenanigans with his two younger siblings, Jesse and Tracy. Robert enjoyed spending time at his grandparents’ farm near Wilmont, Minnesota, especially riding Dusty the pony. He also enjoyed spending long summer days camping with his family at various local state parks. He was an avid explorer and even when he wondered off the trail always made his way back. He loved swimming at the Worthington pool and was an amazing swimmer. He loved roller skating and wooed his future wife, Lynn, with his fancy footwork on one of their first dates. Robert enlisted in the Army National Guard in November of 1989. Robert graduated from Worthington High School in 1990. Robert was deployed and served during the Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom conflicts. Robert received his honorable discharge in April 2010 with a rank of SGT E5. On August 26, 1995, Robert was united in marriage to Lynn Madison at St. Kilian Catholic Church in Wilmont, Minnesota. They would live in Luverne, Minnesota for the first couple years of their marriage, and then settled in Magnolia, Minnesota. Robert held many jobs throughout his life, but his long-term career was being a youth supervisor at Southwestern Youth Services in Magnolia from 1998 until their closing in 2022. On Wednesday, April 8, 2026, Robert passed away at the VA Hospice Cottage in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 54 years, 4 months, and 24 days.
Robert was a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church in Luverne. He served on the Magnolia City Council, and the Magnolia Fire Department, both as a firefighter and on the rescue squad. Robert was also an American Legion Post Member in Hardwick, Minnesota as well as the Eagles Club in Worthington, MN. In his spare time, he enjoyed deer hunting, motorcycles, and watching movies, especially Sci-Fi. He also liked anything that involved airplanes and spaceships. One of his most favorite pastimes was exploring the countryside on his motorcycle with his brother Jesse. Most of all he loved his family, playing with and teasing his children and grandchildren. He also had a love for telling jokes and riddles which his family will remember fondly.
Robert is survived by his wife, Lynn Somnis of Magnolia; three children, Sierra (Addison) Jobe of California, Missouri, Adam (Linda Zheng) Somnis of Burnsville, Minnesota, and Eric Somnis of Magnolia; four grandchildren, Ellowny Jobe, Korbin Jobe, Sabriel Jobe, and Reigna Jobe; mother, Alverda (Terry) Meyer of Reading, Minnesota; siblings, Jesse (fiance Lisa Loring) Somnis of Sioux Falls; and Tracy (Irvin) Corado of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, brothers-in-law, Dennis (Melanie) Madison of Magnolia, Leslie Madison of Rushmore, Minnesota, and Allen (Michelle) Madison of Reading; as well as many beloved cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Warren R. Somnis; father-in-law, Leroy Madison; mother-in-law, Alverna Madison; Grandparents Thaddeus and Inez (LaRoche) Houser; Bill and Jean (Ross)(Somnis) Hobbs, and Robert Somnis.
