Rose Anna Beck was born to Rufus and Anna (Berkenpas) DeZeeuw on June 2, 1936 on a farm near Holland, Minnesota where she was one of 14 children raised. Rose attended school in District #15 but was only able to complete schooling through the 8th grade as she was needed at home to help with her younger siblings and her mother. On September 22, 1956, she was united in marriage to Darrell Beck at the First Presbyterian Church in Holland. Following their marriage, they lived in Luverne, Minnesota, and Rose worked at the laundry. A short time after their move to Luverne, they moved to Pipestone, Minnesota where she stayed at home to raise their children. At the age of 27, Rose experienced the unimaginable loss of her two-and-a-half-year-old, Jeffrey, to meningitis on the same day their daughter, Julie, turned five years old. Another tragic loss struck the couple when Julie was hit and killed in a car pedestrian accident when she was only 18. In spite of such losses, Rose never lost her faith or love for her family and friends. In January of 1972, she became employed in the Dietary Department at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Pipestone, where she worked until she retired after a total of 42 years. She was a friendly and familiar face, whose smile brought joy to so many.
Rose was a member of Christ the King Free Lutheran Church in Pipestone where she was active in the Bible Study Groups and the Women’s Missionary Federation and was chairman of the Fundraising Committee. She loved to clean and keep everything spick and span. She enjoyed watching sports, especially the Twins and the Cardinals, although she cheered for the Cardinals the hardest; but her favorite times were spent with her grandchildren. She will be remembered by her fun and bubbly personality. Rose passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 12, 2025 at the Pipestone County Hospice House at the age of 89 years and 10 days.
She is lovingly remembered by her three children, Kathy Kowalczyk of Pipestone, Minnesota, Doug Beck of St. Louis Park, Minnesota and Kris Schiager of Pipestone; six grandchildren, Angie (Adam) Von Busch of Lincoln, Nebraska, Tony Drews of Omaha, Nebraska, Vanessa Drews of Calmar, Iowa, Jessica Nygaard of Pipestone, Jared Nygaard of Scottsdale, Arizona and Jacey Schiager of Rochester, Minnesota; five great-grandchildren, Ethan, Zachary and Aaden Von Busch, Peyton Drews and Caleb Drews; sister, Ardis (Roger) Nielsen of Springfield, Minnesota; sisters-in-law, Jean DeZeeuw, Henrietta DeZeeuw, Carol DeZeeuw and Lulu Molohon; and extended family, Donovon Keeney, Alonso Baez, Kennedy Lambert, Jason Klimavicz and Curtis Nygaard. She is preceded in death by her husband, Darrell Beck; her son, Jeffrey Beck; her daughter, Julie Beck; her granddaughter, Angela Ruth Williams; great-granddaughter, Tatum Drews; eight brothers, Paul, Rudy, Bernard, Jake, Sidney, Anthony, Kenneth and John DeZeeuw; and four sisters, Mary Petersen, Melba Petersen, Violet Brinkman and Sylvia Slieter.
