He graduated from Pipestone High School in 1983, and furthered his studies at Dunwoody Technical Institute majoring in Automotive Technology. He enlisted in the Army Reserve in 1983 and served until 1995, as Senior Wheel Vehicle Mechanic and Wrecker Operator and earned the rank of Staff Sergeant during Desert Storm.
