Valborg Hughes

Valborg B. Olson was born to Reuben and Hazel (Simons) Olson on March 23, 1919 on the family farm in Moody County, South Dakota. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith at the Lone Rock Church in Moody County, Minnesota. She was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Ihlen, Minnesota. After her graduation form Pipestone High School in 1937, she went on to nurses training at Moe Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She pursued a nursing career at various locations. On December 12, 1941, she was united in marriage to Paul J. Hughes in Freeport, Illinois. Following their marriage, they lived in several different places while Paul served in the Navy for 20 years. After which he was employed by the Social Security Administration for several years in Ohio and Michigan. In 1976, they retired and made their home in Tucson, Arizona. Paul preceded her in death in October, 1993. Following his death, Valborg continued to reside in Tucson, until 2006 when she returned to Michigan to be closer to her children. Valborg died peacefully on Wednesday, December 1, 2021 at her apartment in Michigan at the age of 102 years, eight months, and nine days.

She enjoyed working with stained glass and cross stitching. She was a likeable lady who was easy to get to know. She was a good conversationalist and was always in a good mood. She will be remembered for her continuously positive outlook on life.

She is lovingly remembered by one son, Sean (Susan) Olson of South Lyon, Michigan; her granddaughter and great-granddaughter, Erin and Emma Hughes of Farmington, Michigan; one brother, James Vatne of Ihlen, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; her daughter, Rachel Hughes; her parents; step-father, Orvie Vatne; and one brother, Oran Olson.
