Obituary for Hazel C. Schroyer
Hazel Carol Schroyer was born on May 21, 1928 to Christian and Helen (Holm) Jensen in Britton, South Dakota. She grew up in Roslyn, South Dakota, graduating high school in 1945. She then furthered her education at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. On June 8, 1951, Hazel was united in marriage to Mark Schroyer at Lake Shetek Bible Camp near Slayton, Minnesota. The couple then made their home in Pipestone, Minnesota. Along with raising their children, Hazel worked as a church secretary and as county recorder at the Pipestone County Courthouse. Hazel also worked as an elementary teacher, librarian at Brown Elementary School, secretary at Pipestone High School and secretary for Bill Burkholder, Business Manager of the Pipestone High School. In August 2002, Hazel and Mark moved to Ridgeview Estates in Pipestone. Mark passed away on November 10, 2008. Hazel entered the Pipestone County Hospice House on October 2, 2017. She went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at the age of 89 years, four months and 23 days.
Hazel was a member of First Lutheran Church in Pipestone, where she had belonged to Circle and served in the past as a Sunday school teacher. She received her baptism in the Lutheran Faith on June 24, 1928 in Roslyn. In her early life, Hazel gave of her time as a 4-H Leader. She enjoyed traveling, attending plays and concerts, bird watching, making lefse, playing cards and going to her children and grandchildren’s activities. She will be remembered for her compassion to others and devotion to her Lord and family.
Hazel is lovingly remembered by her six children, Samuel Mark (Patsy) Schroyer of San Francisco, California, Gail (Jim) Spencer of Hollywood, California, Cheryl (Dale) Johnson of Lake Benton, Minnesota, Kae (Bob) Honeman of Erhard, Minnesota, Richard “Chuck” (Deb) Schroyer of Pipestone, and Lori (Torito) Schroyer of Seattle, Washington; 12 grandchildren, Jamie Spencer, Kelley Spencer-Olah, Matthew Johnson, Justin Schroyer, Haley Honeman, Creighton Schroyer, Leslee Burns, Ben Honeman, Derek Schroyer, Tyler Schroyer, Lucas Schroyer, and Kali Schroyer; eight great-grandchildren, Jensen Spencer, Torin Schroyer, Laney Johnson, Kashton Schroyer, Frank Olah, Ryne Johnson, Liam Schroyer and Zoey Burns; one sibling, Richard (Ellen) Jensen of Naperville, Illinois; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mark; grandson, Nathan Johnson; parents; and a sister, Esther Nelson.
