Obituary for Carson W. Ehde

CARSON WILLIAM EHDE, 21, died Tuesday, Sept. 13, at his home in Rock County near Garretson, South Dakota. He was born on June 4, 2001, in Luverne, Minnesota, to Scott and Lori, joining his big brother Jonathan. He was baptized in the American Reformed Church, Luverne, where he received his early lessons in faith.

He attended school in Luverne where he enjoyed sports and competed at state with his tennis team. He played JV hockey with his fellow "senior rookies" who had a blast on the ice despite never winning a game in their one-year career. Carson was a talented musician who learned piano from Dolly Talbert and spent hours at the keyboard at home playing his favorite country songs by ear. In high school he performed with his percussion team in the band and sang bass in the concert choir.

Carson graduated in the "Covid Class" of 2020 and earned his Ag Business degree from Southeast Technical Institute in Sioux Falls. He was farming with his Grandpa Ehde and was preparing to one day take over the operation. Carson was proud of his custom baling business, and he was beginning to grasp that he couldn't control Mother Nature, the markets or unplanned breakdowns.

Among his favorite haying places were the Kroontje pastures by Kenneth where he navigated rolling hills and a winding creek with his John Deere equipment. It's also the farmplace of childhood memories of Sunday dinners and fresh-baked buns with Grandpa and Grandma Kroontje and his doting aunties and Pipestone cousins.

Carson and his high school friends spent hours working on their trucks and engaging "shenanigans" that made his mother worry. She often remarked that this group of boys - especially Carson - were "mischief makers" from birth, but she also recognized their spirited souls were what made them special. She will hold them dear as they continue their journeys without her son. Among the many blessings of moving "west" when his mom married Matt was that Carson and Eli Bakken became neighbors as well as cherished friends and confidants.

Carson's favorite hobbies involved working out and working with motors. When he wasn't at the gym or working in the shop with Grandpa Ehde, he was riding wheelies on his Honda four-wheeler and polishing his 1997 Chevy pickup. Carson and Eli were terrors on the trails when they accompanied their families and the "hood" on annual ATV rides.

Carson's sweetest Ehde family memories include snowmobile trips to the Black Hills with his dad, brother, grandpa and Uncle Roger (Nelson). Carson especially enjoyed the open meadows where he delighted in "boondocking" to send white plumes of snow in the air behind his sled. During up north summer vacations he learned at age 8 to water ski and was proud to eventually navigate the lake on one ski.

Carson relished attention from adoring little fans that included his nephew Colton and young cousins Brentley, Addi, Brystol, David and Teagan.

His most recent treasured moments were with his sweet Gracie. They loved to travel but also enjoyed the simplest of pleasures making meals together, taking the dog for walks in the Palisades and just being together watching movies or playing Xbox.

He was thrilled to join the Rozeboom family at the Verne Drive-In where he often manned burgers at the grill with Gracie's little brother, Jace. This summer, he had asked Gracie's cousin to help him shop for an engagement ring, and he fretted to his mother about whether he could someday be "enough" for this woman he loved so much.

He knew he was dearly loved, despite the final moment of darkness that overtook his light.

Carson is lovingly remembered by his love, Gracie Rozeboom, Luverne; his parents, Lori and Matt Sorenson of rural Garretson, and Scott (Kari Mess) Ehde of Hills; his brother, Jonathan Ehde and special friend, Brittany Landwehr of Sioux Falls; sister, Alexx Sorenson and special friend, Jake Swier of Edgerton; nephew, Colton Gunnink of Edgerton; grandparents, Art and Carol Ehde of Luverne, and Arden and Mary Ellen Sorenson of Jasper; special family, Kevin Rozeboom and grandma Donna Vahey of Luverne; aunts, Lisa (Byron) Pals of Pipestone, Linda Rice of Sioux Falls, Lana (Glen) Grabill of Jackson, Lavelle (Dave) Bobrowsky of Cass Lake, Susie (Rick) Petersen of Brandon, Andrea (Steve) Oye of Luverne, and Mary (Doug) Flier of Valley Springs; and cousins, Cassandra (Jordan) Hulstein of Pipestone, Taylor (Brittany) Pals of Elkton, Sawyer Pals (special friend, Brooklyn Judstra) of Sioux Falls, David and Silas Bobrowsky of Cass Lake, Gary (Annie) Grabill of St. Peter, Leslie (Shawn) Willaby of Glenville, Katie Grabill of Albert Lea, and Cody Grabill of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Rachel Kroontje; aunt, Pam (Ehde) Lais; and uncle, Eric Rice.
